Lessons From Three Recent DWI Cases in North Carolina

While it can be helpful to learn about the various DWI laws in North Carolina, sometimes real-world cases provide more important lessons. Reading about potential DWI penalties is one thing, but seeing these consequences unfold in real life gives you a more accurate sense of how these situations play out. Three recent North Carolina DWI cases provide important lessons that could help if you ever face these charges yourself.

North Carolina School Bus Driver Faces 60 Misdemeanors

It is possible to face dozens of criminal charges for a single drunk driving incident. This was made clear by a recent case involving a former school bus driver in North Carolina. The bus driver is currently facing 53 separate counts of child endangerment – one for each of the children riding on her bus at the time of the offense. She is also facing seven additional misdemeanors associated with driving while impaired.

Police allegedly saw her “driving erratically” and decided to stop her before concluding that she was impaired. This individual could face decades in prison for her various misdemeanors and tens of thousands of dollars in fines. Finally, her commercial driver’s license could be revoked. The lesson here is that you can face a separate, additional offense for each child in your vehicle at the time of your alleged DWI.

NASCAR Legend Arrested for DWI in North Carolina

At around the same time, a former NASCAR champion was arrested for alleged DWI and reckless driving in North Carolina. Police say that he was almost twice the legal limit and that his eyes were bloodshot. In addition, he allegedly broke the speed limit by almost 20 miles per hour. In the aftermath of this incident, the former racer apologized to his fans and admitted his mistake.

The lesson here is that DWI penalties apply to everyone – even celebrities. No one is above the law. In fact, you might even argue that a celebrity suffers even worse consequences due to the reputational damage of a conviction.

DWI Driver Accused of Causing Two Injuries

In September of 2024, a Subaru driver allegedly turned in front of a motorcycle in Asheville. This caused the motorcycle to crash, and two people riding on it suffered critical injuries. The Subaru driver was immediately arrested on suspicion of DWI – and it is likely they will face particularly serious penalties due to the motorcyclists’ critical injuries.
