Numerous Cocaine Arrests Occur Throughout North Carolina

Coastal South Law

Over the past few weeks, numerous people have been arrested for possession and trafficking of cocaine in North Carolina. The defendants include bartenders, social workers, and various others. The extent of these arrests highlights law enforcement’s strict approach to cocaine in the Tar Heel State. If you face consequences after being caught with cocaine, it might be time to speak with an experienced defense attorney.

Woman Attempts to Use Crawfish to Hide the Scent of 22 Pounds of Cocaine

In North Carolina, the scent of drugs gives police the authority to conduct vehicle searches. This is not the case in many states, and it poses considerable constitutional concerns. In December of 2024, police stopped a woman and searched her vehicle after smelling a mixture of marijuana and crawfish. Despite the fact that the officer initially smelled marijuana, he eventually uncovered 22 pounds of cocaine during the search.

Police allege that the defendant specifically loaded up her vehicle with crawfish to mask the smell of drugs. This story is notable because a K9 unit was not used during the search. Although cocaine smells less strongly than marijuana, police dogs can still detect it with relative ease.

144 Charges Filed After Police Investigate Drug Allegations at North Carolina Bars

Also in December of 2024, it was reported that an undercover investigation targeted bars in North Carolina had led to 15 arrests and 144 separate felony charges. Authorities initially began investigating the bar after hearing reports of drug distribution within the premises.

Police say that undercover officers conducted controlled buys and successfully purchased various drugs at the premises – including cocaine. Some of these individuals seem to be employees or managers at the bars.

Social Worker and Husband Arrested for Cocaine Charges in North Carolina

One of the most notable cocaine arrests in recent weeks involved a social worker in Halifax, North Carolina. The defendant is an employee of the Department of Social Services, and she was arrested alongside her husband after a drug task force investigation.

Police initially obtained probable cause to search the suspect’s vehicle after a narcotics canine alerted officers about potential drugs. After they searched both the vehicle and the driver, officers saw concealed cocaine. This discovery prompted the suspect to flee on foot. During this altercation, the suspect’s wife – a social worker – arrived at the scene and allegedly withdrew cash and a phone from the vehicle.

Some time later, the couple was taken into custody. The wife was charged with stealing evidence and obstructing a police officer. Police say the investigation is ongoing, and they expect additional drug charges.
