Police Carry Out One of the Largest Cocaine Busts in North Carolina History

Coastal South Law

In late February of 2025, law enforcement officials announced that they had carried out one of the largest drug busts in the state’s history. Numerous people were arrested and charged for various crimes, including cocaine trafficking in North Carolina. If you were recently apprehended after a drug bust, consider speaking with an experienced criminal defense attorney in North Carolina

Wake County Sees Major Drug Bust

Police say a recent drug bust in Wake County has led to 17 arrests and the seizure of guns, firearms, and considerable quantities of drugs. It is reportedly one of the largest drug busts in the history of the Tar Heel State. North Carolina authorities cooperated with the DEA and executed Operation Exploding Kilo – and they remain relatively tight-lipped about the details of the operation. It is likely that this mass arrest involved confidential informants (CIs), and the police want to protect their sources.

Although a large quantity of fentanyl took center stage in this operation, police also seized a considerable amount of pre-packaged cocaine. Many of the defendants were charged with conspiracy to traffic cocaine, a penalty that can lead to an 18-year prison sentence in North Carolina. A large quantity of marijuana was also seized by police officers.

Smaller Drug Busts Continue Across North Carolina

Days later, smaller drug busts continued across the Tar Heel State. The Forsyth County Drug Task Force recently announced two arrests in connection to the trafficking of cocaine. This operation also resulted in the seizure of $9,000 in cash, 12 firearms, and various drug paraphernalia. The two defendants allegedly possessed one pound of cocaine.

One defendant faces various charges, including felony trafficking of cocaine. Because 1 pound exceeds 400 grams, this offense could potentially lead to over 18 years in prison. The other defendant faces a charge of “intent to sell and deliver cocaine” (PWISD). This is a lesser, Class H felony that may result in up to 39 months in prison. However, it is still a serious offense.

With so many drug busts occurring throughout North Carolina, it is likely that innocent people will be swept up and arrested. In the United States, you cannot be “guilty by association.” It makes sense to clear up these misunderstandings with help from an experienced criminal defense attorney in North Carolina.
