Things That Can Make Speeding Tickets Worse in North Carolina

At first, a speeding ticket in North Carolina might not seem like a major issue. However, there are several factors that can make this problem notably worse. These factors may make it even more beneficial to fight your ticket alongside an experienced defense attorney – especially if you face additional criminal charges. That being said, even a simple speeding ticket may be worth fighting in certain situations.

Speeding in a School Zone

Perhaps the easiest way to make a speeding ticket worse is by breaking the speed limit in a school zone. Drivers must adhere to much higher standards in school zones, and even a relatively light burst of speed can result in serious consequences. The speed limits are much lower in school zones for obvious reasons. If you exceed this speed limit by a considerable margin, you can expect some of the most serious traffic tickets possible in North Carolina. As a result, you might want to discuss your circumstances with an experienced traffic defense attorney if you have received a ticket due to a school zone infraction.

In February of 2025, parents in Garner expressed concern over the safety of their elementary school students. The presence of a new VA clinic has brought new traffic to this school, and parents believe that some drivers are not slowing down enough. Many students walk to school in this area, and some tend to rush when they’re late. This can lead to seriously dangerous situations in which students rush across roads while drivers speed by. As with many other school zones in North Carolina, the speed limit here is 25 miles per hour.

A Super Speeder Ticket

Another potential issue is a “super speeder ticket.” In North Carolina, you may get a super speeder ticket if you exceed the posted speed limit by more than 15 miles per hour. You may also get a super speeder ticket if you go over 80 miles per hour. This is a much more serious speeding ticket, and it can even lead to jail time. At the very least, you may be facing a license suspension and severe fines if you receive one of these tickets.

Gun Charges

The presence of guns may also make your speeding charges worse, and this is only one example of when a traffic violation may lead to criminal charges. Once police stop you for speeding, they may be able to search your vehicle and uncover contraband. This occurred recently in Bertie County when a driver was pulled over by police for going 98 mph in a 55 mph zone.
