Thousands of People “Flock” to Cherokee Marijuana Dispensary in North Carolina

The grand opening of North Carolina’s only marijuana dispensary has arrived, and thousands of people have flooded its gates. The lineup was long when this establishment opened, showing just how many people want a safe and legal source of recreational marijuana in the Tar Heel State. However, many questions regarding the legality of this dispensary remain unanswered – and many of the people purchasing marijuana could unwittingly face legal issues. Speak with a North Carolina marijuana defense attorney if you are currently facing charges.

Thousands Spotted at North Carolina Cherokee Dispensary

In September of 2024, Marijuana Moment reported that “thousands” of recreational and medical users had flocked to the Cherokee Nation in order to shop at the new dispensary there. For those who are not aware, this dispensary has been the subject of considerable controversy in the Tar Heel State – and it has been coming for quite some time. Essentially, North Carolina authorities are powerless to stop it because of the legal sovereignty of the Cherokee Nation.

According to reports, 4,000 people lined up at the dispensary over the course of the weekend – and the establishment is obviously off to a flying start. While there were no official numbers regarding sales, one can assume that this was an extremely profitable weekend for the Cherokee Nation. Lawmakers in North Carolina may be watching with interest, especially given the marijuana industry’s potential to generate tax revenue for the state.

According to various sources, there were no reported arrests in connection to the dispensary. There may have been “power in numbers,” and local police may have simply given up trying to stop people going in and out of Cherokee land. In the future, however, they may start to stop vehicles moving out of the area in order to conduct searches. If these searches occur, there will undoubtedly be debates over probable cause and reasonable suspicion. Simply going into Cherokee land does not automatically mean that you’re a marijuana user – and law enforcement cannot make these assumptions without violating the Constitution.

North Carolina Voters Want Medical Marijuana

Also in September of 2024, a new poll suggested that most North Carolina residents want legal medical marijuana. The poll seems to suggest that virtually every demographic and age group wants this change – and this could mean that medical marijuana will soon arrive in the Tar Heel State. Some might call this change inevitable – but there is still fierce opposition from more conservative elements within the government.
