What Happens if You Fake Your Own Death in North Carolina?

Since ancient times, people have been faking their own deaths. It has been used as a method of escape, an opportunity to start a new life, or simply a form of amusement. However, it is important to understand that if you attempt to fake your own death in North Carolina, you may face serious legal consequences. A recent case involving a woman in North Carolina clearly illustrates this.

North Carolina Woman Fakes Her Own Murder Using Online App

On August 28, it was reported that a North Carolina woman had faked her own murder by using an online app to conceal her identity. Once she had hidden her identity, she sent anonymous messages to the Department of Social Service and her friends, reporting her own murder. Specifically, she claimed that she had been beaten to death with a tire iron. This raised numerous alarm bells, and the authorities sprang into action. The Franklin Police Department posted pictures of her size and age along with pictures across various media channels. In the end, they spent over 75 hours searching for the woman. This obviously represents a serious cost to taxpayers in North Carolina.

Eventually, it was determined that the woman was, in fact, alive, and she was promptly arrested in Macon County. According to the Franklin Police Department, the defendant is now being charged with making a false report to a police station, making a false report of death by telephone, and obstructing law officers. All three charges are class 2 misdemeanors in North Carolina, so the woman faces a maximum of 180 days in jail.

It is worth pointing out that this is becoming something of a trend in the United States. Recently, an Alabama woman faked her own kidnapping. This led to a preteen copying the Alabama woman’s false report shortly thereafter. It is not clear why so many people are faking these crimes, but it does not seem to be connected with any potential financial gain, a desire to start a new life, or the need to escape some form of danger.

Many people also attempt to fake their own deaths in order to escape criminal charges. They may believe that this strategy is preferable to working alongside an experienced criminal defense attorney and going through the normal court process. However, it is important to understand that such strategies are incredibly risky, and a criminal defense attorney can provide more effective results with proven defense strategies.
